This April 7, we celebrate the people, programs, and partnerships making mental health care possible across Shelby County.
If you or someone you love has ever needed mental health support, you know how much it matters to have help close to home.
This World Health Day, the World Health Organization is calling on communities everywhere to stand with science and stand together for health. Here in Memphis, Alliance Healthcare Services answers that call every day.
For more than 50 years, Alliance has been promoting wellness in the community, one person, one family at a time. Today, we serve more than 22,000 people each year across 18 locations in Shelby County.
Mental Health Care That Meets People Where They Are
Nearly 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. lives with a mental health condition. In Tennessee, the challenge is even greater. The state ranks 44th in the nation for overall mental health, with a severe shortage of providers.
In Shelby County, 18% of residents report frequent mental distress, and 13% say they needed care in the past year but did not receive it.
Alliance works to close that gap.
Our outpatient mental health programs offer individual therapy, group therapy, and psychiatric services for adults, children, and families. We accept TennCare, Medicaid, and most insurance plans. Sliding-scale fees are available so cost never stands between someone and the care they need.
If you are ready to take the first step, call (901) 369-1410 to schedule a same-day intake appointment.
Responding to Crisis Around the Clock
When a mental health emergency happens, waiting is not an option.
The Crisis Wellness Center on Broad Avenue is Memphis's only dedicated behavioral health crisis facility. It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with 30 crisis beds and 15 detox beds.
The Crisis Wellness Center is an emergency room for mental health, but calmer and more supportive.
Our C.A.R.E. Team pairs a mental health professional, paramedic, and crisis officer to respond directly to mental health emergencies in the community. This approach keeps people out of jail and emergency rooms and connects them to treatment instead.
Each year, Alliance's crisis services help divert approximately 13,000 individuals from the criminal justice system, saving the community an estimated $40 million in jail, court, and hospital costs.
Helping Young People Before Problems Grow
Mental health challenges often start early. Nationally, 1 in 3 high school students reports that their mental health was not good most of the time. In Shelby County, 26% of children live in poverty, a risk factor that makes access to care even more critical.
The Children and Youth Wellness Center provides crisis care for young people ages 4 to 17. It is a safe place where children and teens can get help during a mental health crisis, with support designed specifically for their age group.
OnTrack TN is another example of science-backed care in action. This program helps young people experiencing psychosis for the first time. Research shows that early treatment leads to significantly better long-term outcomes. OnTrack TN connects young adults with a care team that provides therapy, medication management, education support, and career coaching.

Recovery from Substance Use is Possible
Substance use disorder is a medical condition, not a moral failing. Alliance's addiction recovery programs offer the full range of evidence-based care:
Counseling and group therapy at the Community Addictions Center
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT): medicine combined with counseling to manage substance use and reduce cravings
Medically monitored withdrawal management: the only program of its kind in Shelby County for uninsured adults
Recovery looks different for everyone. Alliance meets people wherever they are in their journey.

Stable Housing Supports Lasting Wellness
You cannot focus on your mental health if you do not have a safe place to sleep.
Alliance's Jericho program helps people find stable housing and rebuild their lives after incarceration or homelessness. Jericho combines housing support with case management, connecting residents to mental health care, job training, and community resources.
It is one more way Alliance addresses the whole picture, not just one piece.
Standing Together for Health in Memphis
This World Health Day, the WHO reminds us that health is strongest when communities work together and invest in evidence-based solutions.
That is exactly what Alliance does. Every crisis call answered. Every therapy session held. Every young person connected to early treatment. Every person in recovery supported for the long road ahead.
