A New Chapter for Youth Mental Health in Memphis

On Wednesday, June 4th, we reached a major milestone in the future of youth mental health care in Memphis and Shelby County.

We celebrated the "Topping Out" of the new Children and Youth Crisis Wellness Center. This traditional construction ceremony marks the placement of the final steel beam. It's a significant step toward the facility's completion.

Expected to open in early 2026, the new center will be located at 3200 Broad Avenue. It sits next to the recently opened Adult Crisis Wellness Center. Together, these facilities will form a full-service mental health campus. This campus aims to meet the urgent needs of both adults and youth in crisis.

Why This Center Matters

Local data reveals a concerning trend. Emergency room visits for kids in psychiatric crisis are on the rise. In fact, Shelby County has one of the highest rates in the state for ER visits related to behavioral health. Currently, families often wait more than six months for help. This new center provides families with a place to turn when immediate assistance is needed.

What the Center Will Offer

The Children and Youth Crisis Wellness Center will serve kids and teens aged 4 to 17. These youth will be experiencing serious emotional and behavioral health challenges.

The trauma-informed, state-licensed facility will include:

  • 24/7 walk-in assessments

  • An 8-bed Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) for short-term, intensive care

  • A 4-bed Respite/Observation Unit for short-term monitoring

  • 3 flexible-use beds for stabilization

  • Psychiatric evaluation and medication management

  • Peer support and case management

  • Discharge planning and coordination with schools, families, and providers

Priority will be given to uninsured and publicly insured youth, especially from underserved communities. The goal is to provide fast, age-appropriate care. This care reduces emergency room visits and avoids unnecessary police involvement.

Alliance's Commitment to Mental Health

This new facility is just one aspect of Alliance Healthcare’s long-term vision. The aim is to improve access to behavioral health care across Memphis and Shelby County. Alliance is the region’s largest provider of mental health services. They continue to lead with programs that meet people where they are, especially during crises.

The Children and Youth Crisis Wellness Center officially broke ground in February 2025. Once completed, it will be a game-changer for children and families throughout the region.

Anticipated Benefits for Families

The opening of the new center will greatly benefit families. It will reduce the burden on emergency rooms. Families will no longer face long waits for critical care. This hope for timely support is essential.

Parents will also have peace of mind knowing that help is readily available. The center's resources will offer safety and stability for youth in distress.

Community Involvement and Support

The development of this center showcases the importance of community involvement. Local organizations and stakeholders are coming together. Their support is crucial for making this project a reality.

Fundraising, volunteering, and advocacy all play a role. Community members are invited to contribute to the mission. Whether through financial assistance or spreading awareness, every effort counts.

Looking Ahead

Stay tuned for more updates as construction continues! The future of youth mental health care in Memphis is bright. With investments and attention devoted to this sector, we can expect positive changes. Together, we can create a supportive environment for our youth.
